Panel 1: Printed for Cons?
Posted by redheadeded on June 5, 2021 at 4:59 amHey Guys,
Quarentines are coming to an end, and cons are coming back, is anyone interested in joining in on a large quantity printing of the first book? I am looking at pricing options from the following printers…
Comic Impressions (I have a contact here*)
KaBlam Digital Printers
Comic Well Sprint / grekoprinting
– Oh dam.. I thought I’d had more.. well I’m open to suggestions. 🙂Please let me know:
– If there are other printers to consider?
– What your max cost you’d be willing to contribute?
– The number of issues you’d like to receive?Let me know if you are interested, please feel free to forward this message to anyone in our community who worked on Panel 1.
Thanks again,
D. Alley, the Redheadeded

id be on board with chipping in. What is the budget like to do 100 copies. i’d also, of course, contribute to the second volume.
-
If we are gonna do this we need to move now. We would want the books shipped to Buddy for NYCC.
-
I would be willing to kick in a bit. How would the funds be handled? Gofundme or such?
-
Never use GO FUND me for comics there is a history of Scams with in the industry and it is really looked down on.
Kickstarter believe it or not is the perfect place to make enough for some copies
-
Rob,
I defer to you on the kick starter front.. I think I have a nervous nelly mental block on the whole website. But I”m happy to set it up or just order a couple hundred copiies from a printer.. (a world I am much more farmiliar with)… Let’s set up a hangout/chat some time closer to the end of this week to see who all is interested?
Thursday? Friday? Let me know what days work for you..
You guys reach out and so will I to the community and the authors artist from this year last year, the more we each put in the less the cost will be for the individuals.
Thanks!

I guess the question would be: what is the print-quantity goal?
Another option would be to purchase inexpensive USB drives loaded with the anthology and sell those to cover booth costs. I keep thinking this was addressed previously, but I was never quite sure what the consensus was.
-
Any updates on this conversation?
Anything that can be outsourced at this time?
-
Had the Go Fund Me /Kick Starter begun? If so, what’s the link? I’d contribute to it and I can share out the link to my arts group. May find some interested in sending funding… https://www.meetup.com/PhillyArtsocial/ @buddyscalera

Have you considered selling ad space? that’s a way to cover cost – many magazine/comicbook do that? Where do things stand?
-
-
-
-
I would love to do a print run. I think @sebastianbonet has some experience with printers.
-
OK I would love to have the time and patience to run a Kick Starter and if someone wants to run one, and keep everyone involved that’s a great Idea, but for first run, I just wanted to keep it simple.
I have printer information and I am ready to get this done, but what I need to know is
– who wants in ?
– How many issues do you want?
– How much are your willing to put in?Let me know I will be ordering a large quanity next week on the third. Just let me know by then.
Thanks,
D. Alley, the Redheadeded
-
I still want in. How many issues I order would depend on the cost per issue. Do we know the cost per issue yet?
-
OK the basic quote i have is $991 for 100 books of 140 pages, so since we have 144 the price may vary a bit.
…which for printing seems reasonable to me.. anyone thinks it’s outragous let me know.
I’m putting in for at least 25-50, who wants in and for how many? Let me know. Like I said I am ordering on the third, and I will cover the print approvals, process and make sure they get shipped properly.
100 – $991
200 – $1932
300 – $2873
400 – $3814
500 – $4805
Thanks, D. Alley, the Redheadeded

redheadeded. Reason: FRIKING SPACING ISSUES! Why does the carriage return NEVER WORK! ARGH!
-
Would it be feasible to send out a note asking all CBS members to contribute $25-$50 each to assist in covering these print cost? Adding a deadline to when the money is due (2-3 weeks prior to when the printer needs it to meet CBS deadline).
Maybe not actually creating the kickstarter account, if time/experience isn’t there for us but sending a link to a cashapp, paypal or that venmo – some account that will only be used for CBS comic book printing and CBS marketing cost? It wouldn’t hurt to ask the CBS community on the all member area.

Put me down for 25 books.
-
Ok I tried to reply to this on the 4th.. but I was not able to make it stick.
I have ordered 150 copies. So if anyone else would like a copy of the first printing.. cool.
I think as we finish the second book we should talk about the kickstarter and funded options for printing.. So who’s got suggestions on that? I’m all ears. 😉
Thanks,
D. Alley The Redheadeded
-
I’m willing to donate for books to be distributed at NYCC.
The only question I have is where/how do we send?
-
I’m interested in contributing as well and I’m giving input but I’m not getting any answers/response. Are my post visible?
-
@maryamsmarkers your posts are visible, but I think we’re trying to work out the logistics at this point, and since we’re all volunteers there is the work-life balance to be negotiated.
Be patient, we’ll get there somehow!
-
thanks for responding.
-
-
Maryam,
Sorry for not responding.. I got a little wrapped up in the Anthology and wasn’t as promt as I could have been.
I am a work in progress.
I ran into a lot of print issues, this being our first, and did not hit the dead line. Which I assumed was a thing that would happen with our first print, it is one of the reasons I was not pushing for major involvment past those people who are commited to the forums. (Shot myself in the foot on that one!)
I will let you know how this turns out when I finally have a copy in my hand and hopefully we can do bigger prints and more outreach to the community as we improve.
Thanks,
D. Alley, the RedheadedEd.

Thank you for the update @redheadeded !
Going from concept to finished product alone has been a tremendous learning experience, I can only imagine what you’re juggling getting it to print! Let us know if there’s any of the burden that can be shared, you have been awesome throughout this process.
-
Thanks man! I thought after years of managing print catalogs, I’d be a bit more prepared, but I guess it was years ago, so I am remembering a lot in hindsight.
Hopefully going forward I will be able to share more and we can all be more involved. 😉
Thanks again!

-
Hey guys. Coming late to the party. Just saw this. Is there a way for me to purchase copies of the book? Thanks.
-
Not yet, Still working to get the print proof.
I will let you know as soon as I have an update.
Thanks!
D. Alley, the RedheadedEd
-
If you need help coordinating the process, I can help.
-
I appreciate it, but it was/is mostly delayed because of Covid and supply chain related issues.
As soon as it arrives I will let everyone know. I did not print a LOT of them so if we need more we can figure it out going forward.
Thanks,

-
Great news! When can we know how many units we can buy and or unit price? 🙂
-
Hey @andresbriano
Sorry for the long delays in each reply.. But I have the information..
– I have about 75 copies and the unit price was $11.
You, @philipspace @evolver have been responding to this post. So you get first dibs so to speak, let me know how many you guys want.
– @thesurrealari @krisburgos @buddyscalera @MisterAnderSiN & @maryamsmarkers I have your books accounted for I will be sending you a bill
**As a side note we are looking into the legalities selling everyone’s work in the anthology as a printed book, so if you have any questions we will have some follow up on this soon. @MisterAnderSiN
For anyone who doesn’t get a chance to jump on this first round of prints, This was mostly a test run, but there will be future batch prints and opportunities for purchases. Just stay tuned to the message boards and let us know what all you guys are interested in.
Thanks,
D. Alley, the RedheadedEd.

After speaking to our legal guru Kristian, he looked over the agreements everyone signed and basically said…
1) CBS can print these copies and distribute them at will.
2) CBS can print the copies and charge enough to recoup costs. This would include costs of not just printing, but distribution, marketing etc.
2a) Now … getting to allowing creators to sell these. there is something in copyright law called the “first sale doctrine” which basically means that once you legally sell a copy of a copyrighted work, the subsequent purchaser can do whatever they want with the copy, subject to some exceptions. This is how, for example, you can sell books and CDs on eBay without violating copyright law. If CBS prints the anthologies and sells them at cost to the creators, the creators can do whatever they want with the copies (the whole copies — they cant cut them into pieces and sell the individual issues for example).

Thank you Kris!

Thank you Kris. I suspected as much, but it’s good to know, and overall, excellent news. Thank you for taking the lead.

Still awaiting that bill…Let me know what I owe you.
-
I would like 5 copies, @redheadeded please. If you want to find out about shipping costs, I live in Paris, France. Once you have the total, I can Paypal it to you. Will that work? Thanks!
-
Hey Andres,
Can you please email me your address so I can calculate the shipping and get this out to you?
Thanks,
D. Alley, the RedheadedEd
-
Did you get my email, Erin?
-
I didn’t but I sent you one and we connected. We shoudl be golden from here on out. 😉
D. Alley.
-
@redheadeded Please let me know the total (when you have it) and I’ll Paypal you the payment. Thanks.

OK, *whew
I finally got the books in a place ready to ship to those of you who are not in the NYC area. If you haven’t sent me your address or talked with me individually about payments before now, please sent me a direct message in the forums or email.
For everyone else, your books will be shipped by the end of Feburary at the latest, that includes internationally. Let me know if you need a tracking number.
@Mr.AnderSiN | @andresbriano | @maryamsmarkersFor those of you living in the NYC Tristate area, please let me know when you are available to pick up your copies. I am not shipping anyone more than 5 books less that a day’s drive, you know who you are. 😉
I still have about 50 copies. If anyone else wants to buy some for themselves, price is $11 per copy and I am happy to ship up to 5 copies wherever it takes. Pick up in Bergen County NJ for anything else.
I know @evolver | @philipspace you expressed interest? but I don’t have any notes on what you were interested in, so let me know if I missed anything. 😉
I apologize again for the delay, trust me all the lessons learned on this will be long lasting. 😉 Thanks everyone for pitching in.
D. Alley, the RedheadedEd
-
Hey @redheadeded. Thanks for your efforts. I was planning on paying everything together once you told me the shipping total. However, if you prefer, I can pay for the books now and the shipping when you drop them off. Let me know.
-
-
Thanks for the heads up – let me know if you need me to send over shipping funds. I have no problem covering shipping expenses for my books. This is a learning experience and I don’t mind helping pay my shipping fee. I think shipping goes by weight, if you want me to send the money before or after can be up to you. Whichever is easiest, let me know. Thanks for take the lead on trying this important part! (:😀
-
I will follow up with you on the shipping funds. It’s no problem I will catch up with you on chat this week. 😉
D. Alley, the RedheadedEd

PM me where I can pick them up. I’m on a motorcycle and might have to wait another month before I do, but if it bumps above 50 outside I might just grab them on a free day… gotta start my bike.

Cool No worries!
