One of my absolute favorite books for reference whenever I’m writing contracts or looking up certain copyright and trademark questions I have comes from Thomas A Crowell, The Pocket Lawyer for Comic Book Creators.
The book is written by an entertainment lawyer and specializes in SPEAKING to a comic creator, NOT a business guru, and has fun characters created and illustrated to help in the understanding of laws.
What makes this book a necessity is that it also has fully written contracts (with explanations of each clause) for various scenarios (work-for-hire, etc) that the book explicitly tells the reader to copy and paste to use as a base for their own contracts. It’s an absolute MUST.
As a side note for creators who also dabble in independent filmmaking, he has another book called The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers. It’s the same book, just formatted with scenarios and terminology for indie filmmakers. (Yes, I have both)

Happy day everyone! Did you know on May 30th is National Creativity Day! I’m just saying, the world is our oyster. Do something spectacular that day, for sure. Here are the amazon links to the legal books discussed during our 5/2 meeting. Stay the pencil
Volunteer Lawyers of the Arts :
They are pro-bono lawyers who will help with certain areas of law. I’m not sure of all of the details of on what they will assist with, for free but reach out if you deem fit. There is a VLA in almost every state/city. Google “Volunteer Lawyers of the Arts” with your city attached for area specific details. Here’s the one for NY, which is the tab for the National directory.

Legal terms and pricing:
The Guild publishes a handbook every 3-5 years on “ethical” content. I think its a great resource for any creative to have. I haven’t joined the Guild yet, but I have been thinking to do so, I see it as a benefit for sure, once time allows. This book is due to release it’s newest edition on Tuesday May 18th. I have listed the newest version link first. The prior version is below. That’s all the resources I have, but they are big and highly noted in our respected industries.
