If anyone has any more information or has worked with Buddy Boss before. Please comment below so we can get a conversation going and so that we can also think about the next platform to move too. If you also have a different message board platform that you think would work out well for us as well please put that below as well with links so I can check them out.

Thanks for setting this up @videogamingtalkblog. Everyone can join us. @mikedoestheart is helping on this as well.

I reached out to the team at BuddyBoss for some details on 3 questions (bolded below). Here’s what they told me:

    1. Is there a demo version that I can install on my website so I can see how it will look?

We don’t have the one-click installer in our new BuddyBoss Theme that automatically copies all the content, design, and data of our public demo site. As it is causing a lot of issues as we have experience in the past with our old products that have the one-click installer. Hopefully, it will also be implemented in the future as well.

In the meantime, please watch the following tutorial to import the default data. This will provide you a dummy data to play with while still working on your website and have the basic foundation of your website similar to what we have on our demo.

    https://www.youtube.com/user/eisenwasser/videos

Feel free to play around with our public demo site:
    https://demos.buddyboss.com/online-communities/

    2. Is there a free version or is it only the paid version?

Are you referring to the demo version? If yes, kindly refer to my answers to point 1. Thank you!

If you are referring to the BuddyBoss platform, we have a free version and a paid version.

If you need Zoom integration, you will need the paid platform so you can use the feature.
For more information, you can check it here https://www.buddyboss.com/platform/

    3. If I install this to replace the existing BuddyPress website I have (create.comicbookschool.com), will I lose all of my Users and conversation threads?

No, you will not lose your users and conversation threads if you replace your existing Buddypress website with BuddyBoss.

By simply activating the BuddyBoss Platform, all the data from BuddyPress will automatically be implemented in the BuddyBoss Platform.

BuddyBoss Platform is a fork of BuddyPress and is designed to be backward compatible with BuddyPress data and most BuddyPress plugins. If you have been using BuddyPress in the past, you should remove it as this is a full replacement. We have improved almost every aspect of BuddyPress and added many new features

Since BuddyBoss Platform is a fork and forge of the BuddyPress plugin and bbPress plugin. Any plugin developed for the BuddyPress and bbPress plugin is supported by the BuddyBoss Platform.

You do NOT need to install the BuddyPress plugin or the bbPress plugin separately. BuddyBoss Platform acts as a replacement for both the plugins.

For a reference, please check this to see the difference between BuddyBoss and BuddyPress.
    https://www.buddyboss.com/buddyboss-vs-buddypress/

You can also check this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TY_XRkAOE64. You can just ignore the Boss Theme on the video, but it sums up the migration from BuddyPress to the BuddyBoss platform.

I hope this helps, but please let me know if you need anything else or if you have any other questions.

I’m still not sure if I understand the “Demo” version.

We have the orginal forums, but they appear to be broken. We can create a test to see how the existing forums would pick up the new template.

Just talked again with the rep from BuddyBoss. She provided me with a link. BuddyBoss is free and we can use it as a platform.

There are some features that require the paid version. Most notably, you need a paid account to integrate Zoom.

    Look here:

    Hey

I removed BuddyPress and replaced it with BuddyBoss on the original test forums here:

    http://make.nicolescalera.com/

@videogamingtalkblog – You will see that your old registration works. The problem is that BuddyBoss wants me to change the post style. You can see that in the YouTube videos above. That means we will maintain registered users. The original posts will be there, but they will be very, very difficult to find.

@mikedoestheart – This is a bit before you joined the team. You can register on this test forum. As noted, I am running BuddyBoss.

I have not installed the BuddyBoss theme, so it still looks exactly the same.

Meant to put this up on this thread earlier from an e-mail thread, but life came at me a bit fast this week.

“If the current forums are built using buddypress as mentioned earlier, than that upgrade process ‘should’ be seamless; nevertheless, I would imagine we could (1) backup the current site to restore it in case of a failure and either (2a)try to install buddyboss on top of the current config and work through the bugs live or (2b) have a concurrent copy of the site that’s not live and try to install and work through the buddyboss install/migration process on that site while the original is up so as to not have any downtime on the site.

Not sure how you guys handle backups on the site now or who does your hosting, but I’d imagine we should be able to have a test site and debug it from there.”

    Mike and Kevin,

I contacted BuddyBoss. Here’s what they told me.

    Hello Buddy,

Thank you for patiently waiting. I’m sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Yes, you can use the original settings for permalinks (plain).

You don’t need to migrate from Buddypress to the BuddyBoss platform. It will automatically reflect the discussions, replies, and forums once the BuddyBoss platform has been activated and BuddyPress is deactivated.

Can you try running the BuddyBoss Repair Forum? Kindly navigate to BuddyBoss> Tools> Repair Forum then check all boxes and click on the repair items button.

Note: Please create a backup of your site before doing so, for security purposes.

Let us know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Mike & Kevin:

I just created a new website as a sandbox. I invited you both as administrators.

    http://sandbox.nicolescalera.com/

Please do not set anything up. Let me do those first couple of steps.

    Mike & Kevin,

I’ve added some of the plugins I had on the original test forum (make.nicolescalera.com) and put them on http://sandbox.nicolescalera.com/. This configuration is similar to what we have here.

I’ve also added a bit of media to ensure it is like the experience here.

By tomorrow, I will try to replicate the switch to BuddyBoss.

So far, everything seems to be working.

Okay, everyone. BuddyBoss is installed. Thanks to @Kevin for sweating this out with me and testing it. We still have to install the premium theme, but this is encouraging!
